Does anyone know...

...if the originators of Burning Man are Landamarkians? I haven't attended but the language of the event and attendees seems to be very Landmarkish. I wonder if BM was created from the originators involvement with Landmark?

Hum don't know. I've completed the up through the introduction to leaders program and have been to burning man but don't know if there is any connection from the beginning.

    Don't know either.
I was talking to 3 friends in San Fran that were going to this years event though.
One of them mentioned that people seem to rally together to take responsibility for the event and other participants because they all were part of creating event.

My comment on that was this.
Sounds just like the rest of the world, although most people have forgotten that they had a part in it and therefore abdicate their responsibility for it.
If talking about Burning Man stimulates this kind of conversation and thought, perhaps there is a connection.
That's what came to mind for me anyway.
    Never been there myself.
Sounds more like a "left coast" thing to me. :-D
    I'm in the Boston area.

i've gone to burning man since 96, and began doing landmark work in 99, and went through the ilp and many other programs...

so with my experience on both sides, i'm going to take a wild guess and say no. at least in all of my landmark work in san francisco, i've never heard of any connection with burning man -- last year, there was a special introduction done specifically for burners, but i sincerely doubt that larry harvey got the idea as an selp project or anything. if it had been, i would imagine landmark would try to promote that somehow (sorry for the edge of cynicism but i was asked over and over again if they could use my selp project to promote landmark, which i declined)

and i have seen very little that evokes the spirit of transformation landmark-style in the way burning man is planned or managed, really. i love them both, and certainly there are a lot of landmark people who go to burning man, but in my experience, that is something that evolved over the years, and not something that was part of the context of the event.

i'm sort of curious about what language you mean from the attendees -- since there are 40,000 people there. and a large majority are there for the party. what have you heard people saying that reminded you of the distinctions of landmark?

I had watched vid's of BM from last year and the originators were describing the year's theme and they just sounded Landmarkish. I can sometimes sniff out another Landmarkian by our language. The attitude of not being stopped in life and the importancy of acting now seem Landmark like. Creating abundance, living present, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if organizers have some experience even if it was just the Forum.

I remember my Advanced leader speaking about how the leaders of Landmark were trying to determine how would they measure the effectiveness of Landmark on society at large. They believe that if they start hearing their language in general use then they would know the education is getting out. I wouldn't think of any official connection between the two...just an influence. I had the feeling that Landmark was against consciousness work that could be done at BM.

i think that there are a lot of progressive thinkers who hold the same values that landmark teaches. none of it is really new.

and i have a feeling that many landmark leaders would indeed hold some judgments about the kind of consciousness work that some burners choose to do on the playa and in their personal lives. i was told that any kind of illegal behavior is verboten for anyone who represents landmark in any way, and there is a rather conservative streak through the landmark leaders i have encountered.

personally, i've never seen any signs or heard any indication that larry harvey or the members of the llc have done landmark work. i do know one seminar leader who went last year, but most of the landmark people i know on the playa were burners first, and then did landmark education. not all, but most.
  • Re: Does anyone know... "all paths"

There's that old saying that "all paths lead to enlightenment". I've had glimpses of this. I haven't been to BM, but it seems to me that those things the make us more aware of ourselves and others and that promote sharing and being straight bring us closer to enlightenment faster (some of those roads are smoother than others).

Being Catholic, I was just thinking earlier today that my Catholic/Christian journey in some ways has made enlightenment easier and in some ways harder. I've learned to confess my sins (clean up my messes and genuinely be present to the impact of my sins), acknowledge God as my creator (being humble), the Golden Rule... It's harder when we think that if we go to church on Sunday and contribute to the collection that we will be saved (enlightened). I think that even observing the Ten Commandments is just the first rung on a long ladder of progressively more enlightened ways of looking at things. I think Integrity and Honoring your Word are at least a few rungs higher than that...
